India’s first Writer’s Village was inaugurated in Thano village, about 24 km from Dehradun by former President Ram Nath Kovind along with Uttarakhand Governor Lt Gen Gurmeet Singh (retd), Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and CBFC chairman Prasoon Joshi.
During this occasion, a three-day International Literature, Culture and Art Festival, Sprash Himalaya Mahotsav 2024, also took place. The first work of writer’s village, ‘Ram in the Himalayas’, written by the former Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, was also released.

Where Did the Idea Come From?
The writer’s village is the plan of former CM Nishank, a distinguished writer himself. Nishank disclosed that the late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee served as the inspiration for the writer’s village concept. He voiced his worry over India’s lack of regard for writers. By establishing an environment where authors may flourish, Nishank hopes to solve this problem.
Objective of the Project-
To encourage creativity, create a supportive environment for writers and develop Dehradun as a new cultural hub.

What Legends Stated?
Former President Kovind commended the initiative as a unique platform for writers, artists and cultural enthusiasts, predicting it will attract tourists due to its distinctive purpose.
Governor Lt Gen Gurmeet Singh noted Uttarakhand’s literary heritage and expressed hope that the village will inspire future generations of writers and poets.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that Devbhoomi Uttarakhand has been a wonderful centre of creativity for centuries and the vastness of the mountains here, the purity of the Ganges and the unique natural beauty have always inspired writers, poets and thinkers.
