On October 28, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez inaugurated a new C-295 aircraft manufacturing facility in Vadodara, Gujarat. The facility is India’s first private-sector Final Assembly Line (FAL) for military aircraft, opening the door for the domestic production of state-of-the-art C-295 military aircraft. Also, it marks a major milestone for the nation, reinforcing its “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives.

The C-295 Aircraft: A Strategic Choice-
According to Airbus’ official website, C-295 is a short form in which ‘C’ stands for CASA, ‘2’ for the number of engines and ’95’ for the engine’s payload capacity of 9.5 tonnes.
It is equipped with advanced avionics and is capable of short take-offs and landings. The C-295 Aircraft is a highly adaptable multi-role aircraft known for its reliability in tactical airlift, humanitarian aid and military missions across various challenging environments. It is perfectly suited for India’s diverse terrain and operational demands. It can transport up to 71 troops or heavy equipment. It would replace the Air Force’s Avro-748 planes.
Tata-Airbus Partnership: A Historic Collaboration-
The C-295 production facility is a significant step by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) in partnership with Airbus Defence and Space (Airbus DS), Spain.
Under this contract, Out of these 56 aircraft,16 aircraft would be delivered fully assembled from Spain, while the remaining 40 would be assembled in India at the new facility in Vadodara. According to officials, the first aircraft produced locally in Vadodara would be completed by September 2026, with all 40 units scheduled for delivery by August 2031.

- Skill Development and Employment: Airbus would provide training and skill development for local workers. This would create a skilled workforce and employment opportunities in the future.
- Strengthening India’s Defense Capability: This domestic facility would reduce India’s dependence on foreign suppliers and build self-sufficiency in defence. It would not only support the Indian Air Force but also serve other countries, strengthening India’s position as a defence exporter.
- Economic Growth and Enhancement in Innovation and R&D: The new facility is expected to create thousands of jobs and stimulate local industries. It would also serve as a hub for aerospace innovation and research and development in India.
